Meta's attempt to lure creators to its platforms comes as questions remain over the future of its main rival in the US.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched an incentive program called "Breakthrough Bonus" aimed at attracting popular creators from other social media platforms in the US. Eligible users can earn up to $5,000 by joining either Facebook or Instagram and posting original content on both platforms within their first 90 days. The requirement is to post at least 20 reels on Facebook and 10 reels on Instagram every 30 days, which must be new videos not previously shared on other platforms.
The move is seen as a response to the uncertainty surrounding TikTok's fate in the US, with Meta attempting to capitalize on the potential loss of users. The program offers not only financial rewards but also additional perks such as a free subscription to Facebook and Instagram's blue check verification system.
Meta has been making moves to expand its presence in the social media landscape, including introducing an app called Edits similar to ByteDance's CapCut video editing platform and launching a feature to allow users to add affiliate links directly on their videos, similar to TikTok Shop. The company is also revamping Instagram's design to make it more similar to TikTok, but this has been met with criticism from some creators.
TikTok, which has 170 million users in the US, has recently resumed services after a ban was temporarily lifted by President-elect Donald Trump. However, analysts predict that the ban could still happen and that Meta is poised to take advantage of the situation.
