"The Brutalist" and "Emilia Pérez," two films facing controversy over artificial intelligence usage, lead the nominees for the Academy Awards.
Two films, "The Brutalist" and "Emilia Pérez", led the nominees for the Academy Awards announced on Thursday. However, both movies are facing controversy over their use of artificial intelligence (AI).
"The Brutalist", a drama about a Hungarian-Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and flees to the US, used AI to enhance actors' voices and supplement visuals in its ending sequence. The film received 10 nominations, including Adrien Brody for best actor and Felicity Jones for best supporting actress.
"Emilia Pérez", a musical centered on a transgender Mexican cartel leader, led all films with 13 nominations, but has also come under fire for using AI to clone Karla Sofía Gascón's voice. The controversy sparked debate over the use of AI in filmmaking and its potential impact on actors' performances.
Representatives for both movies declined to comment, while representatives for the Academy Awards did not respond to requests for comments.
The issue has raised questions about the ethics of using AI in filmmaking and whether it could compromise artistic integrity.
