Sainsbury's to cut 3,000 jobs and shut cafés

The changes are part of a cost-cutting plan, but recent tax rises for businesses have also been a factor.

* Sainsbury's: - Cutting 3,000 jobs - Shutting down remaining 61 cafes and patisserie/pizza counters - Reducing senior management roles by 20% - Costs due in part to £140m rise in employer's National Insurance contributions from April
* Morrisons: - Announced plans to axe 201 office-based jobs
* Government response: - Statement from Downing Street: "Difficult decisions were needed to restore economic stability"
* Industry and union reactions: - Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith: cuts are "devastating but no surprise" - Unite union: job cuts are "a blatant example of profiteering on the backs of workers" - Catherine Shuttleworth, chief executive at retail marketing firm Savvy: cuts are likely to be the first of many for the retail industry
