Scottish Water bills set to rise 9.9% in April

The firm says increases were necessary to fund infrastructure aimed at coping with climate change.

* Scotland's water bills will rise by almost 10% from April, with homes in band A facing an increase of £36 to over £400.
* The increase is necessary for Scottish Water to invest in infrastructure to cope with drought and intense rainfall brought on by climate change.
* Current projections show a four-fold increase in Scotland's daily water supply deficit during droughts or periods of low rainfall, from 60 million litres to up to 240 million litres per day.
* Water main bursts are expected to become more prevalent by 2050 due to drier ground conditions creating movement.
* Scottish Water's chief executive Alex Plant said the company's infrastructure is under "serious pressure" due to the changing climate and that increased investment is necessary to maintain service quality.
* The annual increase will enable Scottish Water to invest prudently for the future while ensuring costs are shared fairly between current and future generations.
