Coca-Cola recalls drinks in UK due to chemical levels

The firm is recalling Coca-Cola products from shops, but says the risk of illness is "very low"

* Coca-Cola has recalled several products in the UK due to elevated levels of chlorate, a chemical that can cause health problems.
* The affected products include cans of Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero sent to cafes and restaurants, as well as 6x250ml Appletiser multipacks sent to supermarkets.
* The recall is due to "higher levels" of chlorate found in the products during routine testing at a production facility in Belgium.
* The UK Food Standards Agency has been informed of the recall, which does not affect standard cans or glass and plastic bottles sold in the UK.
* Chlorate can be produced when chlorine-based disinfectants are used in water treatment and food processing, and exposure to high levels can cause health problems including thyroid issues, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and limiting oxygen absorption.
* Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has said that the risk of illness is "very low" and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
