Its Gemini tool wildly overestimated global gouda consumption in ad that was meant to show off its capabilities.
Google edited an ad for its AI tool Gemini after it inaccurately stated that Gouda cheese accounts for 50-60% of global cheese consumption, a claim described as "unequivocally false" by a blogger. The original commercial was intended to be broadcast during the Super Bowl and featured Gemini helping a cheesemonger write a product description based on incorrect information. Google executive Jerry Dischler initially blamed websites that Gemini scraped data from for the error, but later acknowledged it was a mistake and re-edited the ad to remove the inaccurate claim.
