The Home Office served the notice to the tech giant under the Investigatory Powers Act.
* The Home Office has served a notice under the Investigatory Powers Act, requiring Apple to provide access to encrypted data stored by users in its cloud service.
* The demand is aimed at accessing data stored using Advanced Data Protection (ADP), which uses end-to-end encryption that only the account holder can access.
* Privacy International has called it an "unprecedented attack" on individuals' private data, and a charity's legal director said it sets a "hugely damaging precedent".
* Apple has declined to comment but says on its website that privacy is a "fundamental human right", and the company has previously stated it would not comply with such demands.
* Cyber security experts agree that creating an entry point for authorities could lead to bad actors also discovering it, compromising users' data.
