Tue, 11 Feb 2025 Coca-Cola says it will sell more soda in plastic bottles if aluminum tariffs take effect

Coca-Cola can also find domestic aluminum sources and increase the price for customers, CEO James Quincey said.
The company has been using a mix of aluminum and plastic packaging, but Quincey emphasized that plastic is a viable option if aluminum becomes more expensive due to the tariffs. He noted that Coca-Cola buys some aluminum from Canada and that while the tariff increase will have an impact on the company's costs, it will not be "radically change" its business. In recent years, Coca-Cola has increased its use of aluminum packaging, but the company also uses PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles. PET is a lightweight plastic that can be easily recycled, but it has a lower recycling rate than aluminum. The shift to more plastic packaging could have environmental implications, as Coca-Cola has been named the world's worst polluter by Greenpeace for six straight years due to its single-use plastic usage. The company recently reduced its sustainability goals, aiming to use 35-40% recycled material in packaging by 2035, down from its previous target of 50% by 2030.
