Fri, 14 Feb 2025 US politicians furious at UK demand for encrypted Apple data

They say the US should re-evaluate its cyber-security partnership with the UK unless the "dangerous" request is withdrawn.
Two US lawmakers have expressed strong opposition to the UK's request to access encrypted data stored by Apple users worldwide in its cloud service, calling it a "dangerous" and "shortsighted" move that threatens US cybersecurity. Senators Ron Wyden and Congressman Andy Biggs urge National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard to give the UK an ultimatum: back down from the demand or face consequences. They argue that agreeing to the request would compromise the privacy and security of American citizens, as Apple's encryption software is the same for users worldwide. The lawmakers also warn that complying with the request could expose Americans to espionage by countries like China and Russia. The UK government has been asked about its request but declined to comment.
