Sat, 22 Feb 2025 BMW delays electric Mini over 'uncertainty'

The vehicle manufacturer says "multiple uncertainties" in the industry led to its decision.

* BMW has delayed its plans to reintroduce electric vehicle production at its Oxford Mini plant due to "multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry".
* The company will no longer accept a £60m grant related to the project, but remains in close dialogue with the government.
* The delay is linked to the UK's zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which car makers have argued is too high.
* BMW had announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds to prepare the Oxford factory for electric production, with a target of 2026 for the start of new electric Mini models.
* The Department for Transport says it is consulting on reinstating the 2030 electric vehicle deadline and investing over £2.3bn to support industry and consumers in making the switch to electric.
