Tulsi Gabbard said she was seeking further information from the FBI and other US agencies.
US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard was not informed about the UK government's demand for access to encrypted Apple data worldwide, according to a letter she wrote. The UK government asked for this access under the Investigatory Powers Act in January, but only recently did Apple respond by removing its top-level data security tool from the UK market. This action would have required Apple to break its encryption systems and share protected data with law enforcement. Gabbard is seeking further information from US agencies and has expressed concerns about an "egregious violation" of US citizens' privacy if the reports are true. She also questioned whether the UK government had breached a pact between the two countries not to demand data belonging to each other's citizens.
