Technical issues have affected UK banking app users on payday for the second-month running in 2025.
Banking apps experienced IT issues on payday in the UK, with Lloyds Bank and Halifax apps being unavailable to thousands of users. The TSB and Bank of Scotland apps were also affected by technical problems. A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson stated that the apps and online banking services are now working normally. This is not an isolated incident, as it's the second time in 2025 that banking app users have encountered problems on payday. Concerns have been raised about the reliance on mobile and internet banking services, which can lead to issues accessing physical cash and bank branches.
Some users experienced difficulties paying essential bills or transferring funds due to the IT problems. Disability rights groups are calling for access to physical cash to be protected. Cyber-security experts and financial technology experts have commented on the fragility of legacy banking systems and the need for modernization to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident highlights the importance of having a reliable and secure banking system, which is crucial for the economy. Experts warn that repeated IT failures can lead to a loss of confidence among consumers and potentially harm the economy.
