The Justice Department said Chinese agencies paid as much as $75,000 (£58,200) for each hacked email inbox.
US Charges 12 Chinese Nationals in Alleged Hacking Scheme
* US prosecutors have charged 12 Chinese nationals with being part of an alleged hacking scheme that sold data of US-based dissidents to the Chinese government.
* The operation, described as "state-sponsored," also targeted:
+ US government agencies, including the Treasury
+ An American religious organization that had sent missionaries to China and criticized the PRC government
+ A Hong Kong newspaper considered opposed to the PRC government
+ Foreign ministries of Taiwan, India, South Korea, and Indonesia
* The hackers allegedly sold data of targeted individuals for between $10,000 to $75,000 per email inbox.
* Two officers of China's Ministry of Public Security are among those charged.
* China has denied involvement in similar hacking incidents in the past.
