Fri, 07 Mar 2025 Horizon scandal: Compensation offered after death

Widow of Horizon scandal victim urges government to speed up compensation payouts

* A widow, Janet Walters, whose husband Terry was a victim of the Post Office Horizon scandal, has called for compensation payments to be sped up after receiving an offer of redress days after her husband's death.
* Despite submitting a claim over a year ago, Terry died without receiving all the money he was owed.
* The government claims to have doubled the amount of payments made to former sub-postmasters but Janet describes the offer she received as a "slap in the face".
* Terry and his wife had to sell their home and live in rented accommodation due to the financial losses they incurred due to the scandal.
* There are no official figures for how many victims have died before receiving full compensation, but over 250 had done so by early 2024.
* Janet believes that receiving the money earlier could have made a huge difference to their quality of life and is considering writing to King Charles to urge action on the matter.
* The Department for Business and Trade says it has doubled redress payments and is making offers to 89% of GLO claimants within 40 days, but Janet says this is not good enough.
