The BBC understands the dispute over accessing encrypted data is set to be heard at the High Court.
* Apple is set to appeal a UK government demand to access highly encrypted customer data at a secret hearing in the High Court on Friday.
* The US tech giant took legal action after the Home Office demanded access to customer information protected by Apple's Advanced Data Protection (ADP) programme.
* The government claims it needs to be able to see the data if there is a national security risk, but Apple says creating a "backdoor" would undermine the security of its systems and put customers at risk.
* The hearing will be held in private due to its relation to the security services, but campaigners argue that the public has a right to know about the case.
* Apple has previously stated that it has never built a backdoor or master key into any of its products and will not do so in the future.
