Fri, 14 Mar 2025 Clothes brand gets 100 complaints a day that models are 'too fat', says boss

Snag clothing is cited in an online debate over whether adverts showing models who appear "unhealthily fat" should be banned.

* UK's advertising watchdog, ASA, receives 61 complaints about models' weight in 2024, with most being about models appearing too thin.
* None of the complaints were about Snag, an online clothing brand that uses plus-size models and has received over 100 complaints daily about their models being "too fat".
* Snag founder Brigitte Read argues that banning adverts showing bigger bodies is a symptom of society's "fat phobia" and can harm mental health.
* A salon owner and former model for Snag, Sophie Scott, says she receives both positive and negative comments about her size on social media.
* Fashion journalist Victoria Moss believes the debate shows society is not used to seeing bigger bodies in advertising campaigns.
* The ASA gets about 35,000 complaints a year about all advertising, with an advert being investigated if it could be seen to encourage people to aspire to an unhealthy body weight.
