Tata boss Rajesh Nair says US customers are looking for other suppliers as 25% tariffs take effect.
Tata Steel UK says US tariffs on steel and aluminum have "spooked" its American customers, who are seeking other suppliers to avoid "tariff warfare". The company exports around $100m of steel annually to the USA.
Chief executive Rajesh Nair told MPs that some existing customers had contacted Tata Steel to cancel orders, while others were asking for compensation towards the cost of the tariffs.
Nair said that cheaper steel from around the world is being diverted to the UK because of the US tariffs, resulting in a "significant impact" on the company's business.
The UK has resisted retaliating directly with its own tariffs, but Nair called for greater protection for UK steelmakers from foreign imports, rather than relying on retaliatory measures.
Community, the union representing steelworkers, expressed concern about the impact of tariffs and diverted steel on jobs and industry sustainability.
