Only a third of 16 to 24-year-olds gave to charity last year, down sharply since the pandemic.
Due to squeezed household budgets and declining interest from younger individuals, an estimated four million fewer people are donating to charity compared to pre-Covid levels. A survey found that only half of respondents made donations last year, with just one in three 16-24-year-olds contributing or sponsoring someone. This has left charities reliant on a shrinking number of donors while facing rising operating costs. According to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) survey, the main reasons for not donating were lack of funds and lack of interest in charity, respectively cited by 41% and 36% of respondents. Many charities are now focusing on alternative funding sources such as foundations and business donations due to the high cost of individual giving.
