Fri, 04 Apr 2025 'The price of everything is sky high - even fish and chips'

A city chippy was selling portions for 45p - people queueing share their thoughts on rising prices.
A Bradford chip shop sold fish and chips for 45p as part of a promotion, which was similar to the price when it opened over 50 years ago. Hundreds of people lined up outside the shop, with many commenting on how expensive food has become. One customer, Gary Sargent, said that normally he would pay £18 for a portion of fish and chips, but at 45p "you can't go wrong." Another customer, Lee Stewart, remembered when fish and chips cost under £5, and was shocked by the current prices of around £12. The increase in price is due to various factors, including increased energy costs, sanctions on Russian seafood, and poor potato harvests. According to figures from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs' Agricultural Price Index, prices paid to UK farmers for potatoes have risen. In recent years, the average price of a portion of fish and chips has risen from £6.48 in July 2019 to nearly £10 in July 2024. Customers were also concerned about the rising cost of everyday items such as ketchup, which has doubled in price in some cases. Many people felt that cooking at home was not much cheaper than eating out, with one customer saying "everything has gone up" and it costs him £15 to buy fruit and veg.
