Mon, 07 Apr 2025 Rules on UK car firms relaxed ahead of 2030 petrol vehicles ban

The prime minister says the measures are designed to aid the UK motor industry, which has been hit by Trump's tariffs.

* The UK government has relaxed rules on manufacturers switching to electric vehicles in order to "protect and create jobs" as part of a plan to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
* The government will make it easier for car firms to meet annual targets for electric vehicle sales, which currently stand at 28% of new cars sold in the UK this year.
* Manufacturers will now be able to balance their targets against each other and avoid fines if they sell more EVs in later years of the mandate.
* The government has committed £2.3 billion towards tax breaks for people buying electric vehicles and improving charging infrastructure.
* Opposition parties have criticized the measures, saying they are not enough to boost the industry which faces uncertainty due to US tariffs on cars imported from the UK.
* Car manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover have already been affected by the US tariffs, with some firms planning to pause shipments or reduce their dependency on raw materials.
