Fri, 11 Apr 2025 Tensions rise at one of the UK's biggest van-dwelling sites

The number of people choosing to live in vans across Bristol is up from 150 in 2020 to 680 in 2025.
A long-term solution may be on the horizon for van-dwellers in Bristol, as plans are underway to create a permanent site for them. However, the move has been met with opposition from local residents who claim that the current situation is causing problems with litter and human waste at popular beauty spots like Durdham Down. According to council proposals, a dedicated area would be set up for van-dwellers in another part of the city, which could be the first of its kind in the UK. The number of people living in vans has risen significantly, from 150 in 2020 to 680 in 2025, due to rising living costs. Those affected by the situation share their stories: Dave Knight, 60, moved into an old removal van four years ago after struggling with rent payments; Jane adopted a van-dwelling lifestyle due to financial difficulties and accumulated £100,000 in rent and bills; a builder, who wished to remain anonymous, lives in a caravan bought for £500 after facing debt and homelessness. The issue has sparked heated debate among locals, with some calling on the council to take action to resolve the problem. However, van-dwellers like Flora Sidebottom argue that forced evictions cause trauma and mistrust of authority figures. Councilor Barry Parsons acknowledged the need for alternative housing solutions and emphasized the importance of supporting individuals with health vulnerabilities and mental health needs. The council plans to boost outreach and support services for those living in vans.
