The US president exempts some Chinese goods such as smartphones from levies but says it is temporary.

+ S&P 500: up 0.79%
+ Nasdaq index: up 0.78%
* Apple's share price jumped by:
+ 5% in early trading
+ Settled at 2.2% higher
* Other companies that rose include:
+ Chip maker ASML: up
+ Tech firm Dell: up
* European stock markets also rose:
+ UK's FTSE 100: up 2.1%
+ Main stock indexes in France and Germany: both climbed
* Despite the partial rebound, global stock markets are still lower than before Trump's tariffs announcement on April 2.
* The US dollar fell against the British pound by:
+ 0.8% on Monday
+ 2.8% since Thursday
* Bond market appeared stable with a key interest rate on US government debt at:
+ 4.4%, down from earlier highs but still higher than before April 2.
