The postal giant will stop shipping packages to American consumers after a rise in red tape at customs.
DHL Express has temporarily suspended deliveries to the US worth over $800 due to increased red tape at customs following Donald Trump's new tariff regime. The delivery giant will stop shipments from companies in all countries to American consumers starting Monday, until further notice, but business-to-business shipments will still be processed with potential delays.
The introduction of tighter customs checks alongside Trump's tariffs has reduced the threshold for packages entering the US from $2,500 to $800. DHL says it is working to manage the increased formal customs clearances, but shipments worth over $800 may experience multi-day delays.
Packages under $800 can still be sent with minimal checks, but a new rule set to take effect on May 2 will close a loophole allowing low-value packages from China and Hong Kong to enter the US without duties. This is expected to impact companies such as Shein and Temu, which have warned of price increases due to recent changes in global trade rules.
The Trump administration claims that some shippers in China are hiding illicit substances in shipments, but Beijing disputes this, saying fentanyl is a "US problem" with strict drug policies in place.
