Departures from Gatwick Airport were an average of more than 23 minutes behind schedule in 2024.
Gatwick Airport has retained its position as the UK's worst airport for flight delays, with an average departure delay of over 23 minutes in 2024. This is despite an improvement from nearly 27 minutes in the previous year and remains longer than any other UK airport. The airport blames air traffic control (ATC) disruptions caused by staff shortages across Europe and its own ATC tower for the delays.
Birmingham Airport had the second-worst punctuality record, with an average delay of over 21 minutes, while Manchester Airport was third with an average delay of around 20 minutes. In contrast, Belfast City Airport recorded the best on-time performance in the UK for the second consecutive year, with flights departing on schedule more than 90% of the time.
Air traffic control issues are considered "extraordinary circumstances" and do not entitle passengers to compensation. However, some passengers may still be eligible for delayed flight compensation depending on the specific circumstances of their booking.
In a bid to improve punctuality, Gatwick Airport is implementing a new plan with its airlines, while Manchester Airport has pledged to support its carriers in achieving better on-time departure rates.
