Tue, 22 Apr 2025 Free breakfast club trial 'will make life easier'

High Green Primary School in Sheffield is part of a government pilot providing free breakfast clubs.
A Sheffield primary school has launched a government-funded breakfast club, one of 750 schools participating in a pilot program that will run until July. The free half-hour childcare session allows parents like Karen Brennan to send their children to school without worrying about costs, as previously they could only afford it two days a week. Dan Emery, whose daughter attends the sessions, appreciates the convenience and benefits for her development. The club provides pupils with breakfast options such as toast, cereal, yogurt, or fruit, along with activities like craft tables, jigsaws, books, and play table football. Business manager Dawn Aldridge notes a reduction in pupil absences is expected due to the club ensuring children are on time for school and learning about healthy eating.
