Sun, 27 Apr 2025 Fuels arrive to keep British Steel plant going

Steel workers and their families can "breathe a sigh of relief", says the business secretary.

* The UK government has secured 55,000 tonnes of blast furnace coke from Australia and shipments of iron ore pellets and fines from Sweden.
* The supplies will be transferred by rail to the Scunthorpe steel plant and will keep it running for the coming months into summer.
* Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the move has helped protect thousands of crucial steel jobs.
* British Steel's new executives have been appointed, including an interim chief operating officer and human resources director.
* The company's production of steel can continue with the secured raw materials, according to Allan Bell, interim chief executive of British Steel.
* The Community Union, which represents steelworkers, has welcomed the shipments as "much-needed assurance" for their members on site in Scunthorpe.
