The deal was first announced in July last year as part of a wider break up of the Spirit business.
Airbus has completed its acquisition of part of Spirit AeroSystems' Belfast operation, with the deal involving the transfer of A220 wing manufacturing and assembly facilities. The move also includes Airbus work packages at Spirit's factory in Prestwick, Scotland, but the future of this site remains uncertain. Airbus will "assess its long-term strategy" for Prestwick as part of ongoing industrial planning.
The Belfast operation is expected to remain a major employer in Northern Ireland, with around 3,500 staff still working on non-Airbus projects. However, union representatives have expressed concerns about the future of these workers and the wider aerospace sector in Northern Ireland.
Airbus will operate the acquired Spirit facilities as affiliate businesses, while Spirit's wider global business is being divided between Boeing and Airbus as part of a larger break-up deal initiated by Boeing to address manufacturing issues.
