Speaking exclusively to the BBC, Canada's PM says he will only visit the US when there is a "serious discussion to be had".

* The Canadian PM's office stated that they agreed on the importance of working together as independent and sovereign nations for their mutual benefit.
* Trump congratulated Carney on his election win.
* Canada is a big market for US businesses, with 75% of its exports heading south, but only accounts for 17% of US exports.
* The two countries have a trade deficit of $45bn in 2024, mainly driven by US energy demands.
* Relations between the two countries have been strained due to Trump's talk of making Canada a "51st state" and imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.
* Carney says talks with Trump will be "on our terms, not on their terms".
* He highlights that there is a partnership to be had, an economic and security partnership.
* The PM said Canada is the biggest client for more than 40 US states, supplying them with vital energy and fertiliser.
* He expects respect from the US and believes it will come in due course.
