Tue, 29 Apr 2025 Second-hand school uniform scheme 'flat out'

A community shop says, on average, 20 families use its free school uniform service every day.
A community shop in Sunderland, Second Chance CIC, is struggling to meet demand from families who can't afford branded school uniforms. The shop runs a free second-hand uniform scheme, collecting donations of pre-worn items for those in need. Director Wendy English says they are "flat out" serving around 20 families per day, and that clothing costs on top of bills and food is a significant burden. The UK government's plans to limit branded school uniform requirements from 2026 may help alleviate this issue, but some schools argue that uniforms create a sense of unity and pride among pupils. Second Chance aims to move to a larger site this year to cope with the demand, and Mrs English is exploring ways to reuse items with branding such as initials.
