Tue, 29 Apr 2025 Trainer prices will rise due to tariffs, says Adidas

Adidas says trade tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump will lead to price rises for US consumers.
Adidas has warned that import taxes imposed by US President Donald Trump will lead to higher prices in the US market for popular trainers such as the Gazelle and Samba. The company's CEO, Bjorn Gulden, said that the tariffs will increase costs for all Adidas products sold in the US. He also stated that it is currently impossible to quantify the cost increases resulting from tariffs, making it difficult to determine their impact on consumer demand. Vietnam, which has become a global centre of athletic shoe manufacturing, is subject to some of the highest US tariffs, at 46%. However, these levies are temporarily on hold for 90 days as countries try to negotiate better deals. Adidas had exported more products to the US ahead of the tariff implementation and re-routed Chinese-made products meant for the US to other markets. The company reported its strongest sales performance in company history, with profits almost doubling to €610m (£519m) in the first three months of the year. However, it warned that the trade war has "put a stop" to an upgrade in its financial outlook. The tariffs are part of Trump's bid to bring manufacturing back to US shores, but Adidas and other companies have stated that the US lacks factories with specialized equipment to make running shoes and workers with the necessary knowledge to operate them.
