Fri, 02 May 2025 M&S working 'day and night' over cyber attack

The boss of the retailer says he is "really sorry" for the disruption which caused it to pause its online operations.

* Marks & Spencer's online operations have been temporarily shut down due to a cyber attack.
* The retailer's boss, Stuart Machin, said they are "working day and night" to manage the incident.
* The company did not provide an estimated time for when normal business will resume.
* Online transactions account for about a third of M&S's clothing and home sales, with £3.8m spent on these products every day on average.
* Gaps have appeared on food shelves in some stores due to the attack, and loyalty scheme and gift card payments have been disrupted.
* M&S shares have dropped almost 2% since the company first disclosed its IT systems had been disrupted.
* The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned that retailers should be vigilant and has extended its warnings about such attacks to all organisations in the UK.
* Other major retailers, including The Co-op and Harrods, have also been targeted by cyber attacks this week.
* Analysts warn that M&S risks losing out to rivals due to the disruption.
* Food availability is expected to return to normal by the end of the week.
