Taxi app giant Uber said trials showed some people preferred paying in cash or did not have a bank card.
Uber, the global ride-hailing giant, has expanded its payment options in the UK to include cash payments across most cities, excluding London where it is being reviewed. Following successful pilots in several major cities, passengers can now choose to pay for their Uber rides with cash through the app. However, individual drivers still have the option to opt out of accepting cash payments due to safety concerns. This move comes as a parliamentary report suggested that shops and services may need to be forced to accept cash to protect those who rely on it. While the Treasury Committee stopped short of recommending mandatory cash acceptance, its report was seen as a "wake-up call" for the government. Ron Delnevo from the Payment Choice Alliance praised Uber's decision, saying it demonstrates their commitment to the future of cash in the UK. He called on the government to introduce laws requiring all shops and services to accept cash, but ministers have said there are no plans to do so. The move is seen as a significant shift for Uber, which has been criticized for its reliance on digital payments.
