Thu, 08 May 2025 US and UK agree deal slashing Trump tariffs on cars and metals

It will leave a 10% import tax on most goods shipped from the UK to the US.

* The US will reduce import taxes on a set number of British cars from 25% to 10% for up to 100,000 cars per year.
* Tariffs on steel and aluminium have been slashed, with the US agreeing to establish a quota instead.
* A quota has also been established allowing up to 13,000 metric tonnes of beef to be imported tariff-free from the UK and US.
* The agreement will create a $5bn (£3.8bn) "opportunity" for exports between the two countries.
* Some tariffs on goods from the UK remain in place, with a 10% duty still applied to most imports.
* Key sectors such as car manufacturing and steel are expected to benefit from the agreement.
* Business leaders have welcomed the deal but expressed uncertainty about its impact on trade between the countries.
