Tue, 13 May 2025 'Fish and chips is special - but costs are rising'

The owners of a Guernsey chippy announce their plans to retire after nearly 25 years.

* Beeton's fish and chip shop in St Peter Port, Guernsey will close on June 28 after nearly 25 years
* The owners, Andy and Kim Ashplant, are retiring due to rising costs of electricity, gas, and cod making it difficult to stay competitive
* Prices had to be increased due to these rising costs, including a shortage of cod
* Mrs Ashplant hopes someone will rent or buy the business to keep it as a chippy, but says what happens next is uncertain
* The couple has run the shop since 2000 and estimates millions of pieces of fish and tonnes of potatoes have been cooked during that time
* Mrs Ashplant admits to feeling sad about closing the business despite planning for retirement
