Tue, 13 May 2025 Is the US finally on track to build a high-speed rail network?

* The US currently has no high-speed railways, but two projects are under construction and others are planned.
* A high-speed rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles is expected to be completed by 2033, while a line from Las Vegas to Los Angeles will open in 2028.
* Other proposed lines include routes from Portland to Seattle and Vancouver, as well as one between Dallas and Houston.
* However, planning for the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver line is moving slowly, and the Texas line has been put on hold after funding was cancelled by President Trump's government.
* China's high-speed rail network will reportedly exceed 50,000 km this year, while the European Union has over 8,500 km of HSR lines.
* The US lags behind Europe and especially China due to a car-addicted culture and lack of investment in public transportation.
* Amtrak, the US passenger train service, is not currently involved in high-speed rail projects, but plans to introduce new trains capable of reaching speeds of 160mph on its Northeast Corridor route.
* Globally, there are 23 nations with high-speed rail networks, according to the High Speed Rail Alliance.
