Tue, 13 May 2025 US cuts tariffs on small parcels from Chinese firms like Shein and Temu

Chinese online retailers had previously relied on the "de minimis" loophole to ship low-value items to the US.

* The US has cut tariffs on small parcels from mainland China and Hong Kong to the US, reducing them from 120% to 54%.
* The flat fee per parcel remains at $100.
* A $200 charge due to apply from June 1 has been cancelled.
* Chinese online retail giants Shein and Temu had previously relied on a "de minimis" exemption to ship low-value items directly to US customers without paying duties or import taxes.
* The US will lower its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on US goods will drop from 125% to 10%.
* The new rates are temporary and may be reinstated in three months if no further progress is made.
