Wed, 14 May 2025 More people needing city foodbank than ever before

Cambridge City Foodbank says it has seen a 90% increase in demand since 2019.
Senior organiser Kate McIntosh says hunger in Cambridge is not just a food problem but an income issue, with many people struggling to afford essentials. The service sees visitors receiving three days' worth of nutritionally balanced food for their entire household. McIntosh notes that the increase in demand has left them stretched, and more people are relying on the service than ever before, often making impossible choices between heating or eating. 87% of people experiencing food insecurity nationally do not seek help, according to the foodbank, which suggests those who visit are "really pushed to the limit". McIntosh stresses that visitors often go without food for a long time before seeking help, requiring significant courage to ask for assistance. She believes the problem is widespread in Cambridge and affects people's neighbours, friends, and colleagues.
