Lawmakers from the president's own party joined all Democrats to reject a key domestic bill, demanding deeper budget cuts.
A key budget bill, championed by Donald Trump as a "big, beautiful bill", has stalled in Congress after five Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against it. The bill aims to extend tax cuts implemented during Trump's first administration but faces opposition from lawmakers who want deeper budget cuts and protection for programs like Medicaid.
The five Republicans who voted against the measure have threatened to continue withholding support unless Speaker Mike Johnson agrees to further cut Medicaid and includes a full repeal of green energy tax cuts in the bill. They argue that the current legislation falls short of addressing deficits.
Democrats, on the other hand, have expressed concerns about the potential impact of spending cuts on the Affordable Care Act, which offers subsidized health insurance to millions of Americans.
The proposed tax cuts would cost $3.72 trillion over 10 years, according to the Joint Tax Committee's estimates.
