Tue, 20 May 2025 AI chatbot to be embedded in Google search

The new option in its marquee search engine comes as the firm is facing competition from AI firms.
Google has launched its "AI Mode" in the US, integrating chatbot capabilities into its search engine. This allows users to converse with an expert-like AI assistant while searching online. The move aims to counter competitors like ChatGPT and other AI services that threaten Google's dominance in online search. As part of this effort, Google also announced plans for its own augmented reality glasses, developed in partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These new glasses will feature a camera, microphone, and speakers, competing with Meta's Ray-Ban-powered AR glasses. Analysts believe the integration of AI into search results will make it easier for users to ask complex queries and reduce the need to browse multiple web pages. However, this could also change the nature of Google's search engine and potentially impact its profits. Google has previously experimented with incorporating AI into its services, including its AI Overviews feature. While this initially generated some negative responses from users, it is now reportedly used 1.5 billion times per month in over 200 countries and territories. The company's push to incorporate more AI into its search engine comes as it faces a court battle over potential changes to its business model after being ruled a monopoly in search.
