Logistics firm Peter Green Chilled supplies major supermarkets, but it is relatively small compared to its rivals.
Peter Green Chilled, a logistics firm supplying UK supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's, has been hit by a ransomware attack. The company claims that its customers are being "held to ransom" and that thousands of products could go to waste as a result.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening and the firm said it would not process any orders until further notice. Managing Director Tom Binks claimed that transport activities were unaffected, but this contradicts reports from one of their customers who claims that his meat products are being held up due to the attack.
Industry experts say that smaller logistics firms like Peter Green Chilled may struggle to combat cyber attacks due to limited resources. This is in contrast to larger companies which have more funds available to invest in IT security.
The Cold Chain Federation, a trade body representing the warehousing and food storage industry, says that its members are constantly under attack from hackers. In fact, there has been a significant increase in cyber attacks on the sector over the past year.
This highlights the risks faced by small logistics firms who may not have the necessary resources to prevent or respond to such attacks.
