OpenAI is moving into hardware, in a threat to giants such as Sir Jony's former firm.
* Sir Jony Ive's startup io will merge with OpenAI, a leading AI firm
* OpenAI will buy out the rest of io, valuing it at $6.4bn (£4.7bn)
* Sir Jony will assume deep design and creative responsibilities across the company
* OpenAI aims to develop a "family of devices" specifically designed for AI
* The merger is seen as a challenge to Apple, which has been slow to incorporate AI into its products
* Shares in Apple fell more than 2% following the announcement
