Many have found success in roles such as security operations, incident response, and forensics, which align with their military background. Interim Chief Information Security Officer Mo Ahddoud, who spent 10 years in the Royal Artillery, believes that his military training has informed his approach to cybersecurity. He says that dealing with problems and thinking in terms of risk, defence in depth, and layers of defence are skills he developed during his military career that have translated well to his current role. The cybersecurity industry is facing a global shortfall of four million professionals, according to the World Economic Forum, making it an attractive field for veterans looking for a new challenge. The UK's armed forces have also launched an accelerated training program to bolster their cyber capabilities, with successful candidates eligible for high starting salaries. Veterans are finding that their experience in the military is a natural fit for cybersecurity roles, which require similar skills such as problem-solving, team work, and adaptability. Many have transitioned into the industry through programs such as the Forces Employment Charity's TechVets initiative, which helps veterans find employment in tech and cybersecurity. Employers are increasingly recognizing the value that veterans bring to the table, with many reporting a high level of job satisfaction among ex-military personnel. However, some adjustments may be necessary for those transitioning from military to civilian life, such as adapting to different onboarding processes and job titles. As one veteran noted, working in cybersecurity can be just as rewarding as serving in the military, with opportunities to make an impact and contribute to a sense of camaraderie. With the industry facing a significant talent shortage, veterans are finding that their skills and experience are highly sought after, making it an attractive career path for those looking for a new challenge.
