Tue, 27 May 2025 Older Londoners 'losing sleep over money worries'

Age UK London said the withdrawal of the winter fuel payment had caused extra hardship for some.

* 38% of older Londoners (over 50) reported concerns about getting into energy debt over unpaid bills.
* Many older people struggle financially, face digital exclusion, and have difficulty dealing with increasing costs of housing and home maintenance.
* One in four older Londoners said their home was colder than they would like it to be "all of the time" or "most of the time".
* 36% of older Londoners felt less financially secure heading into 2025 compared to at the start of 2024.
* The withdrawal of Winter Fuel Payments has had a significant impact, with many pensioners unable to afford heating and food.
* Some older Londoners are selling their possessions (e.g. jewellery) or working long hours to make ends meet.
* Financial insecurity is causing anxiety, isolation, and sleep disturbances among older Londoners.
* Age UK London wants the government to introduce simplified benefit applications, stronger rent protections, and improved mental health support to help older Londoners navigate financial difficulties.
