The president's signature import taxes win a legal reprieve, as the White House rails against "activist judges".
* A federal appeals court has granted a temporary suspension of the lower court's order that deemed most of Trump's global tariffs as illegal.
* The White House had argued that the trade court's decision was an example of judicial overreach and threatened to unravel months of hard-fought trade negotiations.
* The Trump administration claimed in its appeal that "the political branches, not courts, make foreign policy and chart economic policy."
* Trump blasted the lower court ruling on social media, saying he hopes the Supreme Court will reverse it quickly and decisively.
* The appeals court's decision allows the tariffs to be used for now while the case is litigated, with a next hearing scheduled for June 5th.
* A separate federal court also reached a similar conclusion to the trade court, finding that Trump's duties went beyond his authority.
* Trump could potentially expand import taxes under other laws, such as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 or Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
* Lawyer Ilya Somin said he is "guardedly optimistic" about the ruling being upheld on appeal, while others expressed caution and uncertainty about the outcome.
