Mon, 02 Jun 2025 Quicker flights promised in flight path shake-up

Ministers say the plans could allow planes to climb more quickly during take off and descend more smoothly.
The UK government plans to overhaul its airspace, potentially leading to shorter flight times and increased capacity. The project aims to redesign flight paths in areas such as London, which were largely established 70 years ago. This could allow planes to take off and land more efficiently, reducing delays and pollution. However, environmental groups warn that the changes may expose more communities to noise and air pollution. The government hopes that modernizing airspace will help reduce aviation's impact on climate change and pave the way for new technologies like flying taxis. The UK Airspace Design Service (UKADS) is expected to be operational by the end of this year, with changes in London not anticipated until the 2030s. Some alterations may occur before then in other areas. Airlines and airports have welcomed the move, but environmental groups are concerned about the potential consequences for communities near flight paths.
