Tom Pinsard says he was shocked at the cost of rent in Guernsey after he returned from Australia.
* A Guernsey man, Tom Pinsard, returned home in June 2023 after a 10-month absence and found that rental costs had doubled.
* The family's original two-bedroom house near the beach cost £1,300 per month when they left in 2022, but the equivalent accommodation now costs £2,600-£2,068 (average local market rental price) per month.
* The government's Property Prices Bulletin shows that rental prices have risen 51.7% over five years and 8.2% compared to Q1 2024.
* Tom Pinsard's family was forced to live in temporary accommodation due to the unaffordable rental costs, draining their savings.
* They eventually bought a house after making "lots of sacrifices", including working extra hours and sacrificing time with their children.
* The Guernsey Community Foundation report suggests that rising living costs are driving young families away from the island.
