Thu, 05 Jun 2025 Trump confirms China trip after 'very good' call with Xi

The leaders of the US and China agree to further talks aimed at reaching a deal amid an ongoing trade war.
Donald Trump has announced that he will visit China after speaking with Chinese leader Xi Jinping over the phone. The US president said that during their "very good talk", he reciprocated an invitation to the White House, which was reportedly requested by the White House itself. According to Trump, the conversation focused on trade and resulted in a positive outcome for both countries. During the call, Xi reportedly asked the US to withdraw negative measures against China, while also mentioning that Beijing always keeps its promises. The Chinese leader emphasized the need for both sides to abide by their recent agreement, which aimed at reducing trade tariffs. The agreement was reached in May but has been breached by both sides amid claims of non-compliance. The US accused China of failing to restart shipments of critical minerals and rare earth magnets, while Beijing denied the allegations and accused the US of undermining the deal with new restrictions on computer chips. Trump said that he invited Xi to visit the White House and that he will be going to China "at a certain point" with his wife. The Chinese readout of the conversation did not mention the invitation to the White House. The call between Trump and Xi is long-awaited, coming after months of silence between the two leaders. It also follows warnings from Beijing about handling Taiwan prudently to prevent conflict. In other news, Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump's administration, accusing it of pursuing a "government vendetta" against the university.
