Thu, 05 Jun 2025 US-Boeing crashes deal 'repugnant' - lawyer for victims' families

The plane maker has agreed to pay $1.1bn to avoid prosecution over two fatal crashes that killed 346 people.
A $1.1bn settlement between Boeing and the US Justice Department (DOJ) has been met with criticism from families of the 346 people who died in two fatal crashes involving the company's 737 Max aircraft. Sanjiv Singh, counsel for some of these families, called the deal "morally repugnant" as it allows Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution and pay only a fraction of the total amount towards compensating victims' families. The settlement includes $444.5m in payouts to crash victims' families, $455m invested in safety improvements, and a $487.2m fine - half of which was already paid in 2021. Boeing has stated that it will comply with the resolution, but Singh argues that this is insufficient and that his clients are outraged by the deal. The agreement would see Boeing avoid a trial if approved by a federal judge, but families have the right to appeal when the case comes before a judge.
