Fri, 06 Jun 2025 NatWest fixes app outage which left customers fuming

More than 3,000 people have reported problems during what is the latest in a long line of banking IT failures.

* Customers reported issues with making purchases and paying staff
* NatWest initially said its online banking service was working normally, but this was disputed by some customers
* Problems began to be reported on outage-checking site Downdetector at 0910 GMT
* Some customers were able to access their accounts through online banking or other means
* Customers expressed frustration with the bank's response and lack of a timeframe for resolving the issue
* The incident is part of a larger trend of banking outages, which have affected major banks in the UK since 2023
* According to a report, nine major banks and building societies had around 803 hours (33 days) of tech outages between 2023-2024
* Banks face costs from compensation payments due to these outages, with Barclays facing potential payments of £12.5m
* NatWest has previously paid £348,000 in compensation for outages since 2023
