Mon, 09 Jun 2025 China's electric cars are becoming slicker and cheaper - but is there a deeper cost?

The future for EVs will inevitably involve China. But where does that leave the UK and Europe markets – and what of the questions around national security?
Chinese EVs in Europe:
* French company Renault is partnering with a Chinese-owned battery firm AESC to set up an ultra-modern EV "hub" in northern France.
* The hub aims to produce affordable electric cars using lean production techniques, similar to those used by Chinese manufacturers. Security Risks:
* Concerns have been raised about the potential for hacking and remote control of Chinese-made vehicles due to their internet-enabled features and over-the-air update capabilities.
* A former head of MI6, Sir Richard Dearlove, warned MPs that Chinese-made technology in products, including cars, could be controlled remotely. Chinese Government Response:
* The Chinese embassy in London has denied all accusations of espionage, stating that the claims are "entirely unfounded and absurd."
* A spokesperson emphasized China's commitment to secure, open, and rules-based global supply chains and compliance with local laws and regulations.
